Puig Moves Closer to His Second Major

David Puig continued to play his way above professional golf's professional divisions, advancing into Final Qualifying for the upcoming 151st Open Championship.

Puig, who local qualified his way into the 123rd U.S. Open at the Los Angeles Country Club earlier this month, and finished T39, shot a 3-under-par 67 to earn medalist honors at the Local Qualifier staged at the North Hants Golf Club, one of 15 events staged on Monday across England and Ireland.

Wrapup of Regional Qualifying for 151st Open Championship

The 21-year-old from Spain was a fledgling star at Arizona State before leaving the university prior to his senior season to join LIV Golf in September.

After finishing third to earn one of five spots available at the Final Qualifier at Hillcrest Country Club on June 5, Puig posted rounds of 69-73-75-67 to finish at +4 284 at the U.S. Open two weeks ago.

In his Open local qualifier, Puig was even-par through 16 holes before finishing eagle-birdie to overtake Rasmus Neergaaard-Petersen for the top spot at the par-70, 6,638-yard venue located some 40 miles west of London.

Puig was one of 117 golfers who moved onto Final Qualifying as 18-hole Regional Qualifiers on Monday.

Scores at Regional Qualifiers for the 151st Open Championship

Final Qualifying for the 151st Open Championship, set for July 20 at Royal Liverpool, will be held on Tuesday, July 4, at three courses: Dundonald Links, Royal Cinque Ports and at Royal Porthcawl and West Lancashire.

This will be England's version of "Golf's Longest Day" in the United States,  where 10 Final Qualifiers, each 36-hole tests, were held on June 5 in the U.S. and Canada to determine the final berths in the just-completed U.S. Open won by Wyndham Clark.
