USGA Accepts Record Number of Entries for the 2023 U.S. Open

A record 10,187 entries, including 15 former U.S. Open champions, have been accepted by the United States Golf Association for 123rd U.S. Open Championship, scheduled for June 15-18, 2023, to be played over the North Course at the Los Angeles Country Club, the USGA reported today. The total marks the second time the number of entries has exceeded 10,000, eclipsing the number of entries (10,127) for the 2014 U.S. Open, played at the Pinehurst Resort & Country over its fame Course No. 2. Entries have surpassed 9,000 each of the last 11 years, according to the USGA. Entries for the 123rd Open came from all 50 states, with California leading the way with 1,282 entries. The USGA also received entries from players from 87 foreign countries, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. The field for the 123rd U.S. Open will be comprised of players exempt via categories of achievement and players who have succcessfully played their way into the championship. The qualifying process begins with Local Qualifying, with 109 18-hole tests set to be played in 44 different states, as well as Canada. Local qualifying will take place from April 17 through May 22nd. Successful local qualifiers will then join a group of players locally exempt in final qualifying tournaments, scheduled for 36 holes played in a single day. Thirteen final qualifying tournaments are scheduled between May 16th and June 5th. The first will take place in England on May 16, with two qualifieers set for May 22nd, one in Texas, the other in Japan. The qualifying process climaxes on June 5th, which has earned the nickname "Golf's Longest Day" with 10 qualifiers to be played across the United States, two in Ohio and one each in California, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, Washington and Canada. Leading the field for the 123rd U.S. Open Championship will be last year's champion Matt Fitzpatrick. Joining Fitzpatrick will be 10 other U.S. Open champions who are fully exempt from qualifying: Bryson DeChambeau (2020), Dustin Johnson (2016), Martin Kaymer (2014), Brooks Koepka (2017, 2018), Rory McIlroy (2011), Jon Rahm (2021), Justin Rose (2013), Jordan Spieth (2015), Gary Woodland (2019) and Tiger Woods (2000, 2002, 2008). Four other former U.S. Open champions – Geoff Ogilvy (2006), Lucas Glover (2009), Graeme McDowell (2010) and Webb Simpson (2012) – have registered and are exempt into final qualifying.
